First Nations Drinking Water Settlement

Applications are still open for the Drinking Water Settlement until March 7, 2024. On December 22, 2021, the Courts approved a settlement between Canada and certain First Nations and their members who were subject to a drinking water advisory that lasted at least one year between November 20, 1995, and June 20, 2021.

The settlement also includes commitments to fund the construction, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure to provide First Nations and Individual Class Members with regular access to safe drinking water in their home

Who is eligible?

  • Are a member of a First Nation; and
  • Were born before November 20, 1995, and lived on an Impacted First Nation that was under drinking water advisory that lasted for a year or longer, between November 20, 2013, and June 20, 2021; or
  • Were born on or after November 20, 1995, and lived on an Impacted First Nation that was under a drinking water advisory that lasted for a year or longer, between November 20, 2013, and June 20, 2021

The Settlement also includes children, those with disabilities, and loved ones who have passed away on or after November 20, 2017. Additional compensation may be available for those who followed long-term drinking water advisories but still suffered specific injuries.
